In 2016, Singapore and Japan proudly celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations under the theme SJ50, marking a significant milestone of enduring friendship, mutual respect, and close cooperation between the two nations.
Formal diplomatic ties between Japan and Singapore were established in 1966, a year after Singapore gained independence. However, the two countries had already shared deep-rooted connections through trade and regional cooperation. Over the years, bilateral relations evolved steadily across sectors such as infrastructure, investment, education, and culture.
Japan has long been one of Singapore’s top trading partners and a major investor in the city-state. The close cooperation between both countries is reflected in regular high-level exchanges, defense dialogues, and strategic partnerships, including collaborations in research, sustainability, and people-to-people exchange.
To mark SJ50, a wide range of commemorative events and initiatives took place in 2016, celebrating the diverse dimensions of this partnership.
